Using Plone
Do I Need to Logon?
You only need to logon if you want to edit or add items to the website. Once you're logged on you will see new tabs for editing and adding items.
How do I add a News Item?
Click on the News tab at the top of the page.
Click on the Add New dropdown on the green bar and select News item.
You'll get a new screen allowing you to add the item. You must give it a title, and a short description - this is the description that appears on the summary page (just putting a byline here is quite acceptable).
The main text can be edited in the middle window called Body text; it's a bit like using a normal word processor. There are all sorts of clever things you can do with the menu bar. I'd suggest you type your text first without any complex formatting, save it, then click on edit again before you start changing formatting; but it's up to you.
You can add a single picture with the Image field at the bottom of the page; you can add others (see Getting Cleverer below).
When you're finished your item, click Save. Check it over for errors and make sure you're happy with it.
When you are, click the State dropdown on the green bar and change it to Public. The news window on the left will update, and everyone will now be able to see it.
Until you publish only you and other logged-on users can see it!
How do I add an Event?
Adding an event is pretty much the same as a news item, but:
- Click the Event tab rather than News (doh!)
- You need to select the event start/end times from the dropdowns
- To select types of event, just click once on them to highlight
- When you publish, the event appears in Upcoming Events and on the calendar as a highlighted day
Things to watch out for!
- If you are logged in, clicking on any item will bring up a blank editor window! Just click view and all will return to normal. This bug is fixed in the new release we're putting in soon.
- Pasting from Microsoft Word will give very odd formatting as it copies Microsoft's formatting - which will probably look wrong on your screen, and will certainly look wrong on other people's. To avoid this, paste into Notepad first, then do ctrl-A, ctrl-C to copy the text only, then paste into the editor window.
