Three on a theme - 26 March 2010
The Annual three-on-a-theme competition asks members to submit a “panel” of three images which together tell a story or illustrate a theme. Most photographic distinctions, such as the AWPF one held by the judge, Mike Davies, require panels – usually of more than 3 – in order to qualify, so the event is good practice for those aiming for distinctions; the fact that there are also prizes of vouchers kindly supplied by Jessops is an added incentive.
Mike commented that the key to working well with panels was ensuring balance – no one image should dominate the panel by being strongly different in tone, colour or size. Also, panels should always try to keep the eye inside the panel – having elements in the images at each end that pushed the eye back towards the centre.
Before judging the digital entry, Mike presented a series of panels from painting as well as photography – including the famous “triptychs” common in church art and used these as examples to show members some of the dos and don’ts of panels.
The winners in each category both receive £20 in Jessop’s vouchers. The rankings were:
Print Images
- In the Vanoise National Park by Kathy Edwards
- Fungi by Hugh Winnan
- Bowlers by David Hunt
Digital Images
- Attitude by Noel Taylor
- Beasties by Noel Taylor
- Kenfig Pond by Steve Durbin
The acceptances for the Welsh Salon, the Welsh Photographic Federation’s national competition were also announced at the meeting; four members had had images accepted which will now be shown at the Grand Theatre, Swansea over April. These were – prints: Curtis Fowler LRPS (Approaching Storm) and Kathy Edwards (Pigs Can Fly), digital: John Harvey (Museum Visitors) and Steve Durbin (Graveyard).
Details of future meetings are shown on the club website at www.barrycameraclub.org.uk and potential new members are most welcome to attend free for 2 or 3 meetings while they make up their minds about joining.
