The 2009 Programmme
by Mark Lowen, Programme Secretary
(dates and times of all events are in the Events folder: big thanks to Mark from all of us for putting together such a great programme!)
I have put together the new programme for the camera club to try and cater for all the various requests that came my way at the end of last season, whilst also trying to keep it balanced and not to favour a particular style or type of photography.
I was also mindful that we I needed to get a lot more new and different speakers that have never been to our club before and to make sure that those who have been to our club before are coming again with completely new material. To this end there are a larger percentage of speakers coming to us from further a field than in the past.
I have also tried my best to balance out the different mediums. And to that end there is a good selection of slide presentations as well as print and digital projected image presentations. This also includes an evening of how to put together an AV presentation.
I did try to include contemporary groups to come along and give us a presentation, but without success, for varying reasons and this is something I am keen to work on for the following season 2010/11.
And so to this years programme.
All the monthly competition judges, I believe, are the best the WPF has to offer without exception. All the judges I have booked all came with recommendations from past committees and other club programme secretaries.
Most of these judges are known to the members who have been in the club a number of seasons with the possible exception of Harry Gardiner, AWPF, who is our judge for our set subject and he was chosen for this as he was recommended to me by other judges and this is his preferred subject matter.
Now on to our guest speakers;
Les Loosemore is well known to the club and has been one of our greatest supporters and is coming along with prints and panels, which are all new, unseen material.
John Gray is no longer judging as much as he used to, so agreed to bring along his prestigious prints instead.
Fast Eddie Doherty is a professional glamour photographer who is regularly published worldwide and also runs a series of workshops around Europe for photographers wanting to improve their portrait skills or try their hand at glamour photography. It should be noted that the images shown on this presentation may contain a certain amount of nudity.
Noel Taylor is our current vice chairman and will explain himself what he intends to talk about.
Charlie Waite, the world renowned landscape photographer, was beyond our meagre budget, so I managed to get from him a DVD with the 6, 30 minute programmes he made for Scottish television. This means we have a film night of 4 and the remaining 2 in reserve should we have trouble with speakers getting to us in the winter.
Jennifer Cox is well known on the circuit of speakers and judges and was recommended and requested by several club members.
Robert LLoyd is an excellent photographer and judge and his evening with us is split in to halves where there will be a critique on his own prints and then the other half will be a critique on club members prints.
Anthony Dyke came recommended as a very good landscape photographer of the Gower which should encourage members to get out there and shoot there own images of this beautiful area of Wales.
Tony and Jenny Byram have always given a good presentation and again, this was one that was requested and includes new material we have yet to see.
Tim Collier's work speaks for itself and this presentation should be one of the highlights of this seasons programme and a must attend for all club members.
Our special guest for this season is Roger Payne who is the current editor of Photography monthly magazine, who is coming to our club as a favour arranged by Noel and as far as I am aware, will not be on anyone else's programme in Wales.
Russell Martin was requested by several club members and will be splitting his evening in two halves, the first showing his prints and the second half will be a photoshop tutorial.
The 19th of February will be a practical evening and this will be tailored to the club members wishes.
Nick Jenkins will be coming along with his landscapes of Britain presentation and this again came highly recommended and requested by club members.
Linda Gibbs then follows who was requested to give a presentation on digital AV, which is a growing aspect of club photography in general.
Mark Sisson who is a wildlife photographer specialising in bird photography is next and he is attending as a favour to me. He also runs workshops and is heavily published. His images and first rate and this will be a most enjoyable evening.
Allen Lloyd is next with a photoshop tutorial which is different in style and content from our other speakers past and present. This was requested by the outgoing committee.
Chris Warren was highly recommended and requested and should be a good contrast between his presentation and those we have booked for more local material.
Mike Davies was originally requested as a judge, but is no longer doing this so I booked him as a speaker instead. He is not listed as a speaker with the WPF so this again will be relatively unique to us.
Dorothy Witcomb is an underwater photographer of some note and she will also be bringing along her equipment to explain how she takes her images. Her images are also labelled for the hard of hearing. She again like many other speakers on this programme has never been to our club before.
As I mentioned earlier there is a couple of programmes on DVD should we have a bad winter and presenters have trouble reaching us and these include photoshop tutorials on digital retouching as well as location lighting and studio portrait lighting as well. And another 2 Of the Charlie Waite programmes. If requested, these could be used to extend our season should we wish to do so.
I hope this explains a little of what we have in store for the coming season and hopefully there is something of interest for everyone.
Several things did not come together in time for this programme so they will be included in the following season.
