Tabletop Photography - Meeting 03 Apr 2009
by Hugh Winnan
BCC member and ex. professional photographer Marc Delaney hosted an evening of tabletop photography on Friday 3rd April at the St Francis Millenium Centre in Barry. First he showed members part of his professional portfolio of images produced for a variety of clients over the years to illustrate the sort of quality that is required in the advertising industry. One of the most difficult problems that one encounters he expalined,is that of unwanted reflections or shadows in such pictures. He set up a "tabletop" with a variety of lighting arrangements which then allowed members to photograph objects placed on black velvet. Glassware is best illuminated with strong directional lighting he explained whereas other materials like wooden carvings are best lit using softer lighting. Members asked a variety of questions about techniques which Marc answered with authority during the evening which closed with Mike Lewis, standing in for chairwoman Barbra Archdale-Smith, thanking Marc for an excellent evening of tuition in a field that many members had never explored.
Next week's meeting will be a showing of images that were accepted by the Welsh International Projected Image Salon earlier this year in which several BCC members had acceptances. The Annual Dinner and Awards evening will be held at the Six Bells,. Penmark on Friday 24th April 2009. This event looks like being a full evening for the judge, Mike Davies ARPS, as there has been a huge entry in all classes of the competition. Later this year it is expected that the club will hold an exhibition locally of many of the images members have entered in this annual competition.
Full details of the club's activities are on the website at www.barrycameraclub.org.uk and new members with all levels of photographic ability are welcomed.
