Monthly Competition April 2011

All the King's Horses by Hugh Winnan

Barry Camera Club’s last monthly competition of the season took place on Friday 29th April and was adjudicated by Kevin Thomas, who has enjoyed his numerous visits to our club over the years and was once again made very welcome.  Kevin is very knowledgeable in the world of photography and has gained an FRPS and an MA in Photography, so we felt in very safe hands while he judged our images.  Kevin commented on the wide range of subject matter and enjoyed perusing them, and decided on the following winners:-

In the Monochrome Print category, in 3rd place was by Low Tide Ravenglas by Rob Owens.  2nd place was shared by First Light and Watching both by Brian Trego who has consistently shown his skill during this season’s competition, achieving some very good scores.  1st place went to Stradbally Strand by Rob Owens - a scenic beach across which can be seen a captivating sky, a truly inviting landscape.

In the Colour Print category, 3rd place was shared by four images – Old Barn Door by Kathy Edwards, Norwegian Church by Frank Cleland, Tuscan Farmstead by Barbra Archdale-Smith and Cheeky Ladies by Hugh Winnan.  2nd place was also shared by four images Llyn Cynwch 2 by Rob Owens, Abandoned by Brian Trego, River Deep Mountain High by Allan Preece and Kiosk Meeting Place by Barbra Archdale-Smith.  The winner was Captain And Ship by Mac Britton - an innovative title for this image of and Arab and his camel.  It had great composition, colour and was cropped to achieve a square format.  The subjects are both pin sharp and the camel seems very pleased with itself.

In the Projected Images category, in joint 3rd place were Floating Away by Ceri Ford and Hanging On by Frank Cleland.  In 2nd place was Zap Cat by Frank Cleland.  The winner was All The Kings Horses by Hugh Winnan - Colour is the dominant ingredient in this image; it is striking in its depiction of a merry go round and a king consisting of a wooden statue, very highly painted and eye catching.

This time around we have seen some new faces in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places - well done.  This is a great effort and achievement.  Virginia Kolmar entered a monochrome image of Tenby on a still, but dull day.  It was entitled Tranquil and was Virginia’s first foray into a club competition.  Let’s hope she is encouraged to enter again.  Well done to all our club competitors this season.

Rob Owens kindly gave Kevin Thomas a vote of thanks to round off the evening.

Barry Camera Club meets every Friday evening from 7 to 9.30pm between September and May at St Francis Millennium Centre, Porth-y-Castell, Barry Garden Suburb, Barry, CF62 6NX.  New members are always welcome to attend with no obligation to join.
