Barrian Cup and Dave Cowdry Trophy Report 2008
On Saturday 7th June Barry Camera Club held the Barrian Cup and Dave Cowdrey Trophy competition for the 13th time since it was instituted. Almost 100 people attended at the St.Francis Millenium Centre, Barry for this anual competiton for photographic clubs and this year there were 20 clubs competing, including 4 from the Bristol area. The judge was Brian Swinyard MA, ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP from the Cheltenham and Gloucester Camera Clubs. The proceedings were officially opened by the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr. Audrey Preston. The competiton is kindly supported by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Brian Swinyard explained to the audience that there are 3 main criteria he uses when judging competitions;
- The technical aspects(eg Sharpness etc.),
- Aesthetics (eg. viewpoint), and
- Anything of the photographer has brought to bear on the picture.
Each of the 20 clubs competing entered 5 prints(monochrome and/or colour) so there were 5 opportunities for clubs to gain the maximum marks (20 points) for an individual print. The club with the most marks in total wins the Barrian Cup. The Dave Cowdrey Trophy is awarded to the best landscape/seascape print in the competition. This year the Barrian Cup winners were the Port Talbot Camera Club with 91/100 points. Gareth Martin (pictured) accepted the award on behalf of the club.

Runners up were Neath Photographic Society, Swansea Camera Club and Backwell Camera Club each with 90 points, closely followed by Gwynfa Camera Club and the Vale Photographic Club each with 89 points.
The winner of the Dave Cowdrey Trophy was Neville Thomas(pictured) from the Rhondda Camera Club with his picture entitled Winter Landscape(pictured) which scored 19/20 points.

- Speed your Journey (Gwynfa)
- The Pier (Hanham Photographic Society)
- 2nd Movement (Neath)
- Force 5 (Neath)
- Golden Delicious (The Vale Photographic Club).
After the presentation of the trophies refreshments were provided followed by a raffle . Club Chairman Barbra Archdale-Smith thanked the judge for his excellent comments and advice throughout the judging and closed the proceedings.
