On Friday 27th January, Barry Camera Club held the first monthly photographic competition of 2012. This was judged by Brian Coleman AWPF and member of the Bridgend Camera Club. The winner of the Black and White Print category was ‘Cold Knap’ by Brian Trego and the Colour Print category was also won by Brian with a print entitled ‘In The Glen’. Mark Lowen won the Projected Image category with ‘Daniel’. All three images were highly praised by the judge. Runner Up in the Projected Image category was an image from new member Roy Carr entitled ‘Now What’ and described by the judge as coming from a tradition of documentary photography and reminiscent of the work produced by Patrick Litchfield. Another new member, Catherine Charlton was Runner Up in the Black and White Print category with ‘Just Woken Up’.

On Friday 24th February, Barry Camera Club held its monthly photographic competition which had a set subject of ‘Close Up’. This was judged by Les Loosemore ARPS, AWPF. The winner of the Black and White Print category was ‘Plant Made Structures’ by new member Catherine Charlton and the Colour Print category was won by Steve Durbin with a print entitled ‘Shy’. Another new member Chris Peebles won the Projected Image category with ‘Red Tailed Hawk’. Mike Lewis came second in the projected images with ‘Antique Watches’. This image was taken at Camden Market in London on a market stall, it has been cropped and some of the highlights have been taken down. The judge felt that more highlights could have been darkened and further cropping to concentrate on not so many of the watches, but none the less a very good well seen shot.

On Friday 30th March, Barry Camera Club held its monthly photographic competition. This was judged by Gareth Martin, AWPF from Port Talbot Camera Club. It has been four years since Gareth judged a competition at Barry Camera Club. He was looking for good composition and well mounted prints.

The winner of the Black and White Print category was ‘Snow and Mist’ by Brian Trego and the Colour Print category was won by Chris Peebles with a print entitled ‘Never Mind the Weather’. Steve Everitt won the Projected Image category with ‘Bambino’. The judge’s comments on this image were that he liked the inclusion of the second driver and the isolation of the front driver Brendan Thomas through good use of the ‘Depth Of Field’ technique. He also liked the expression of concentration on the young lads face. This was his first year karting. The Bambino class is an introductory class and the drivers are not supposed to race, this is merely a time trial.

This week, Friday 20th April, Martyn Pinches hosted a Barry Camera Club evening entitles Portraits With Leah Axl.

Martyn first explained the ground rules for the evening. One person only was to shoot at a time and all cameras were to be used manually, with a suggested ISO and aperture, as lighting had been pre-determined.

Martyn also explained how he used lighting in a studio setup. He showed us pinpoint lighting which lit the model, creating hard shadows. To make the shadows softer, Martyn moved the lighting source further away. Diffused lighting from a larger light box gave softer lighting, which he used together to create a more pleasing, even light, which fell on the model’s face, giving her a smooth soft complexion. To alleviate the problem of shadows beneath the eyes, nose and chin a silver reflector (a car windscreen reflector) was used to great and minimal cost – who says photography has to be an expensive hobby?

This simple studio setup was advantageous to those in our club unaccustomed to portraiture. They gained tips and knowledge, as well as some lovely pictures from their first foray into this photographic discipline.

Leah, our model, has to be congratulated for her professionalism and patience while we happily snapped away all night. Many thanks also to Martyn for his time and energy.

On Friday 13th April, Barry Camera Club held a “Three on a Theme” competition. This was judged by Jan Cawley AFIAPF. The “Three on a Theme” competition is not scored and does not count towards points for the year. However, Jan does identify a first, second and third place and a small prize is given to the first place winner. Some of her comments were to keep the mounts the same colour and that some of the images were not sharp enough. She was looking for an image that is a panel from someone who has made an effort rather than just picking out three similar images.

The winner of the print category was Alan Preece with a spectacular array of colours in a set of images called “Coloured Straws”. The winner of the projected category was Steve Durbin with a fantastic set of images called “Kites”. These images were taken at the Art4Ü “Celebration of the Sky” event at Cold Knap last year, organised by local artist Glyn Pooley (who can be seen flying a kite in the right hand panel).

Barry Camera Club meets every Friday evening from 7 to 9.30pm between September and May at St Francis Millennium Centre, Porth-y-Castell, Barry Garden Suburb, Barry, CF62 6NX. New members are always welcome to attend with no obligation to join.
